Our members are the local governments of Massachusetts and their elected and appointed leadership.
The Massachusetts National Guard is inviting local officials to recommend veterans for the Medal of Liberty, which is awarded to the next of kin of U.S. Armed Forces servicemen and women who were killed in action, died in a designated combat area while in the line of duty, or died as a result of wounds received in action.
Local officials and surviving family members may recommend an award of the Medal of Liberty by applying through the Massachusetts National Guard’s Office of the Adjutant General.
After the state’s War Records Section reviews and validates a veteran’s records, the adjutant general and two field grade officers make recommendations to the governor for awarding the medal.

Since its establishment in 2009, the Medal of Liberty has been awarded to 145 families of military members from every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
