Upton, Massachusetts, a vibrant community of approximately 8,400 residents, is in search of an exceptional leader to step into the role of Interim Chief of Police. This is a unique opportunity, as the previous incumbent, with 30 years of service, including 16 as Chief, has recently retired. The Interim Chief of Police, operating under the policy direction of the Town Manager, will be responsible for managing the Police Department’s operations, ensuring the protection of life and property, and the prevention and suppression of crime, in accordance with the Massachusetts general laws and professional standards.

The Upton Police Department is committed to providing the highest quality professional police services in close partnership with the community. Our department members are entrusted with the task of actively promoting, preserving, and delivering a sense of safety and security to all residents. The department is comprised of 14 sworn officers, including the Chief, one Lieutenant, and three Sergeants. In addition, we have one department coordinator, eight communication officers, and three reserve officers, all working together to serve the community.

Candidates must have seven years of experience in police work with five years in a related supervisory capacity. They must be POST certified, CPR, first responder, license to carry firearms, Municipal Police Training Committee certification, NIMS 700/800, and possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be a graduate from a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related degree; or master’s degree in public administration.

The salary range will be subject to contractual negotiation within an estimated range of $2,400-$2,800, based on 40 hours per week for up to six months beginning in August.
