The town of Longmeadow DPW is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time positions of Fleet Mechanic. Position is responsible for performing skilled automotive work in the inspection, diagnostic, repair and maintenance of town trucks and automobiles, heavy and light equipment, and associated mechanical equipment. Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in maintaining the vehicles and equipment of the town. Primary objectives include ensuring vehicles are fixed properly the first visit and the deployment of a preventative maintenance program.

Successful candidate must have:

  • Knowledge of repair and maintenance of light and heavy vehicles and equipment; knowledge of welding; knowledge of repairing electrical and electronic systems; knowledge of conducting safety inspections for all types of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to use current software programs and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot problems with equipment and vehicles; ability to operate machinery and tools; ability to perform auto body work; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to operate heavy and light equipment and trucks in excess of 60,000 GVW. Ability to Work on emergency call out basis, including during extended winter hours. Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Ability to make independent and responsible decisions. Ability to operate vehicle lifts 80,000, 18,000, 10,000 for heavy equipment. Ability to operate an overhead five ton crane.
  • Computer skills; record keeping skills; proficiency with diagnostic software.

High school diploma or equivalent, and three to five years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience in automotive and equipment repair work.

Current valid motor vehicle license; Class B Commercial driver’s license with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements, required with Class A Commercial driver’s license with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements, preferred. Class 2A hoisting license and Class 3A hoisting license for five ton overhead crane. Certified qualified brake inspector to service trucks with air brakes. OSHA 10.

  • Required to be on call as needed to respond to emergencies
