The Massachusetts Municipal Management Association will hold its 10th annual boot camp for new managers on Oct. 12 at the Sharon Community Center.

The day-long training will cover essential topic areas for administrators who are new to the profession and those planning to transition from department head to management. These topics include general municipal management, working with department heads, breaking into the management business, and finance 101.

The event is free and registration is open to all municipal managers and assistants and those currently transitioning into these positions. Department heads, state professionals, and others looking to transition to municipal management are encouraged to attend.

The Basics of Municipal Management
This session will focus on issues that managers/administrators face on a daily basis.  It will include the following topics:

  • What are the different forms of government
  • Working with selectmen, other boards, citizens, press, and staff
  • How to be a leader in your community
  • Building effective relationships
  • How to show community pride
  • Developing a support network

The speakers encourage participants to bring their questions to the workshop so they can cover as many as time allows.

There are always questions on how to break into the ranks of municipal management and how to navigate the process. Speakers are managers who have recently gone through transition.
