The competition for the state’s remaining resort casino license advanced this month, after a series of deadline extensions last year.

Five applicants submitted an RFA-1 application – the first portion of the two-part application required by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission – for the license in southeastern Massachusetts (Region C).

The applicants include MassGaming & Entertainment for a casino in Brockton, KG Urban Enterprises for a casino in New Bedford, and Somerset on the Move and Crossroads, which indicated interest in a partnership to build a casino in Somerset or Fall River.

Seafan Trust submitted an RFA-1 application without the $400,000 application fee and was disqualified.

The second part of the application, the RFA-2, must be submitted to the Gaming Commission by the end of May. Only applicants that are deemed suitable after a thorough background check using information submitted in the RFA-1 application will be invited to submit an RFA-2 application.

The RFA-2 application is site-specific and will detail the plans for the proposed resort casino.

The Region C license may be awarded this fall, at the discretion of the Gaming Commission.

Citing the need to advance economic development in all regions of the state, the commission initiated a parallel commercial licensing process in the region in case the development of a tribal casino included in the state’s gaming legislation is unable to meet federal or other requirements to proceed.

Last year, the Gaming Commission awarded the Greater Boston (Region A) license to Wynn LLC in Everett and the western Massachusetts (Region B) license to MGM in Springfield.
