This month’s Mass Innovations column showcases the winners of the MMA’s annual Kenneth Pickard Innovation Award.
This year’s awards went to projects that encourage accommodations for those in the autism spectrum, reduce cigarette butt litter, promote public art, and efficiently provide emergency information.
The awards were presented at the MMA’s Annual Meeting on Jan. 21 in Boston. The award judges were former Danvers Town Manager Wayne Marquis and former Reading Town Manager Peter Hechenbleikner.
The award is named in honor of Kenneth Pickard, the executive secretary of the Massachusetts League of Cities and Towns from 1969 to 1973.
The winners are:
• Leominster: Creating an autism-friendly city and community
• Salem: ‘Park Your Butts’ retools to improve cigarette waste recycling
• Adams: Board unites artists, local government to spur creative economy
