The House of Representatives this afternoon voted to approve a bond bill that would authorize $200 million for the Chapter 90 local road and bridge program for fiscal 2012.
At the MMA Annual Meeting in January, Gov. Deval Patrick announced to local officials that he would propose a $200 million Chapter 90 program for fiscal 2012, an increase of $45 million over fiscal 2011. In the end, the House went along with this figure.
The Senate Bonding Committee is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the transportation bond bill on Monday morning at the State House.
The MMA and local officials have been urging lawmakers to act quickly in order to meet the April 1 statutory deadline for notifying cities and towns of how much funding they will receive.
“The urgency is really driven not just by the condition of local roads, but by the date on the calendar,” said MMA Executive Director Geoff Beckwith, explaining that municipalities need time to plan projects and take advantage of the full construction season.
